Whistle-Stop in Amsterdam
If you’re short on time or simply want a short break away, Amsterdam is the perfect city to visit and explore in 48 hours.
Getting around is super easy, with excellent public transport links across the compact city centre or explore it like a local on bike. Cycling in Amsterdam is safe and easy with dedicated cycle lanes and flat terrain.
Upon arrival or online, purchase a 48 hour I Amsterdam card City Card for €74, if you’re staying for a day or a few more days there are four options depending on your length of stay. The City Card allows you entry into 60 of Amsterdam’s top museums and attractions, free unlimited public transportation, a 1-hour canal trip, a detailed city map, giveaways and discounts on theatres, concerts, restaurants and more.
Start your first day by exploring the Central Canal Belt which lies in a semi-circle around the Central Station. Head south till you reach the touristy Damrak street, with eclectic shops on either side reaching the Dam Square. Here you find the National Monument and the Royal Palace, you can visit the palace’s elaborate art displayed in its 17 rooms, this attraction is not included as part of the City Card and adult admission is €10.
For amazing panoramic views, head over to Westerkirk, with the tallest church tower in Amsterdam, standing at 85 metres (280-feet). Afterwards you can grab lunch at number of different eateries with outdoor and indoor seating. Head towards the canal for one of several stops and take advantage of your 1 hour canal cruise, included in your City Card. Enjoy the evening by strolling through Westerpark or Rambrandt Park, finish the day with some Dutch pancakes.
Spend the next day exploring the museum quarter and visiting Vondelpark. Van Gogh museum is dedicated to the Dutch artist and has visiting exhibitions throughout the year. The Rijksmuseum houses masterpieces by Rambrandt, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. For those interested in modern art, Stedelijk Museum is just around the corner. There is a large variety of restaurants to eat from when you get hungry, all within walking distance.
