If you want to enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the Caribbean but also want to get away from some of the more over crowded islands then St Kitts and Nevis may be the place for you.

This dual-island is one of the world’s smallest nations. Both islands feature charming plantation inns and historic sites. St Kitts the larger island is home to a dormant volcano, a scenic railway journey and a UNESCO listed fortress. Nevis the sleepy sister island is even more laid back with beautiful beaches and gardens.

 

There’s a lot of great activities to try out while in St Kitts. But one that sticks out is to board the Scenic Railway, the last one in the West Indies. Built for the sugar trade in the early 20th century, the train now takes tourists on an 18 mile journey. The double decker carriages have open sided top decks, so you can enjoy those panoramic views and make most of the cool breeze. You will also get come complimentary rum punch and can relax and enjoy the sounds of the trains on-board choir. This is a great way to see the island.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a must see for anyone visiting St Kitts. Designed by British engineers in 1690 and built by African slaves. This fortress has a terrific history and a wonderful Caribbean vista to enjoy. Enjoy standing next to one of the old cannons.

The island is dominated by three volcanic peaks, the highest being Mount Liamuiga at 3,792ft (1,156m).

 

The journey up passes through small villages and farmland until past a certain point it turns into lush rainforest then near the very top it becomes cloud forest. You may see vervet monkeys and wild orchids. At the top there is an impressive deep crater. The views from the top are outstanding, where you will be able to see neighbouring islands and the ocean.

Whilst there are plenty of activities. There is no denying that most people are attracted to the Caribbean for the clear blue waters and some proper relaxation time. St Kitts and Nevis is perfect for those wanting exactly that. Featuring old plantation houses converted into luxury hotels. This paradise island is the perfect getaway.
