New Zealand: Take 4 South Island

  • New Zealand
  • Queenstown
  • Dunedin
  • Lake Tekapo

In this final installment of our travels around New Zealand. We will finish off on the South Island where we will look at Queenstown, Dunedin and Lake Tekapo.

Queenstown is New Zealand’s adventure capital where you can get your adrenaline fix in so many ways. Queenstown features the stunning Lake Wakatipu surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range, which offers some of the best skiing in New Zealand. You can get great views of all this and more from the Skyline Gondola. The gondola takes you to the summit of Bob’s Peak where there are a wealth of activities including bungy jumping and zip-lining as well as many others. You can also hit the road in a 4x4 and take a tour of Arrow River or jet ski down Shotover River.

Dunedin otherwise known as the ‘Edinburgh of the South’ where it is not uncommon to hear bagpipes or be able to find some haggis on the menu somewhere. This European-influenced city has much to offer in terms of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. There is plenty to explore here including churches, museums and restaurants. Dundedin is also home to the Speights Brewery which has been supplying beer to the country since 1876. You can book a tour of the distillery and of course finish off with a taste of the finished product.

If you have finished your tour of New Zealand in Dunedin but need to drive back to Christchurch for your international flight. Then a stopover at Lake Tekapo is the perfect option. The lake features an incredibly vivid turquoise colour caused by a fine rock sand found in the water. Take a walk along the lakeside then stop off at Church of the Good Shepherd for a photo from the altar window. After exploring you can relax in the soothing hot pools of Tekapo Springs whilst looking out across the lake. The perfect penultimate stop before you fly home.

That’s all for our tour through New Zealand. This incredible country has much to offer in terms of natural beauty. It has a friendly down-to-earth feel about it but with plenty to do for those wanting something more physical. A lovely place to visit.
