Greenland Take 1
Visiting Greenland is a once in a lifetime experience and unlike any place you have ever been, from kayaking between icebergs, dog sledding to experiencing the northern lights.
This week, we will focus on the Arctic Five, five Arctic attractions with a unique Greenland twist. Whether you visit during the summer or winter, you will be able to experience these year round.
First on the list is dog sledding, a great way to explore Greenland's nature while enjoying a social and physical activity. During this experience you can meet the locals who have a close connection and bond with their dogs, this is very much a cultural experience with strange Arctic tools.
Second of the Big Five are the Northern Lights, very much part of Greenland's identity, the magic of the Northern Lights is an indescribable experience. It can be experienced year round but is best between September and April and especially during the winter months when the nights are long.
Ice and snow are next, a visit to Greenland without exploring the mammoth icebergs and the role of snow in the everyday lives and narratives of people here would be a big miss. Visit Ilulissat Icefjord in Western Greenland, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Here you can see hundreds of iceberg's floating, melting in the ice cool waters of the surrounding fjord.
Fourth on the list and a vital part of your experience during your travels are the people of Greenland. A unique mixture of different backgrounds, heritage and traditions.
Last but not least on the list are whales! Whale watching is an experience requiring patience, sitting eye glued at the surface with binoculars waiting to share a moment or two with one of the seas most impressive creatures. The best part of this experience is the unpredictability and the unexpected.
Next week we will explore the cultural aspects of a visit to Greenland. Stay tuned...
