Ghana Part 2

  • West Africa
  • Cape Coast
  • Accra

We are exploring the top 10 experiences not to be missed in Ghana! Last week we looked at five of them, this week we will look at the remaining five. AKWAABA (welcome in Akan)

5. Mole National Park, Ghana’s largest national park, located in the North West of the country. Here you can expect to see, wild buffalo, roaming antelope, elephants, warthogs, hyenas, monkeys and lions. The park is also home to 250 species of birds. You can choose between a walking safari or a traditional game drive accompanied by an armed guard.

4. Kakum National Park, a dense tropical rainforest in southern Ghana, home to large species of mammals including forest elephants, forest buffalo and many other forest animals. The highlight of any visit is the canopy walkway, built 30 metres above ground and is over 350 metres in length. The walkway offers a unique perspective and viewing point of the wildlife and plants of the forest below.

3. Accra, one of Africa’s safest capitals, the city is a mixture of modern architecture, shanty towns and the odd castle. The city is centred around Makola Market, you can find just about anything here. The main attractions in Accra are a variety of beaches, the National Museum that has wonderful displays about the culture and history of slave trade.

2. Elmina and St George's Castle, a picturesque fishing town with one of Ghana’s top attractions, St. George’s Castle. The castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482, taken over 150 years later by the Dutch, becoming the headquarters for their West Indies company. The castle houses a small museum and guided tours around it and inside the dungeons are available.

1. Cape Coast Castle, an excellent museum (West African Museum) exhibiting Ghana’s rich history and culture, a glimpse into the dark period of slavery. Tours are a must and will take you through the door of no return.

Ghana has a lot to offer almost everyone from beautiful beaches, amazing wildlife and a rich history and culture.
