Chile
Chile the skinniest country in South America and also the safest has an abundance of incredible things on offer.
You could pull on a poncho and ride horseback across the flat plains or ‘pampas’. Journey through the Atacama desert, the driest desert in the world, gaze up at the stars at night and take time to reflect on life. Climb the hillsides in Valparaiso and check out the nightlife in Santiago, meet penguins in Patagonia and marvel at the Moais statues of Easter Island.
Santiago is a captivating capital that has both skiing and sailing on its doorstep. Climb Cerro San Cristobal hill for the amazing views. Or visit the Sky Costanera Tower, the highest viewpoint in the city. On a clear day you can see the Andes and the whole city.
Visit any of the Liguera restaurants around the city for some authentic Chilean food and wine. Visit the presidential palace, La Moneda. You need to apply a week in advance but it is well worth it. You can walk or cycle very easily around the city. If you are walking then you can start at the government palace and go to Bellavista, which means that you will see the aforementioned La Moneda, Saint Lucia Hill, Plaza de Armas, Paris and Londres streets, San Francisco church, and the neighbourhoods of Lastarria and Bellavista.
Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean is a plane ride away from Santiago. Best known for its extraordinary archaeology, it has the incredible Moai statues which stand on a ceremonial platform known as ‘Ahu’. Legend has it that the Moai statues were built as representations of the Polynesians ancestors, created to watch over the people. This is a truly mystical experience and well worth a visit.
