Budapest vs. Prague Take 2

  • Prague
  • Budapest
  • Central Europe

This week we will explore, differences in transportation system, food and drink, things to see and do and crowds.

Both cities have great transport systems including trams, metros and buses. Both cities have trams that run parallel to each respective city’s rivers and have some amazing views, making it easy to hop on and off also. Great news, once you figure our the different lines, you will be able to explore both cities with ease.

When it comes to food and drink, Prague offers reasonably priced beer and a lot of Czech cuisine, if you like pork served in different ways, you will love it. You can find restaurants serving other cuisine but these are few and far between, being more gimmicky than offering good quality international cuisine. Prague has been known not to a great destination with limited eateries catering vegetarians and vegans. This has changed in recent years, with more and more exclusively vegan cafés and restaurants, many of which taking traditional meat heavy dishes and turning them into plant-based alternatives.

Budapest on the other hand, also has great beer with the addition of wine, so more variety with regards to drinking preference. Budapest has more of an international and cosmopolitan feel to it, with kebab shops dotted throughout the city, Indian, Japanese and many other types of cuisine on offer. There are many vegan and vegetarian eateries and these seem to be on the rise here as well. All in all, we think Budapest offers more choice and is the winner in our food and drink category.

Prague is much more crowded than Budapest and this can really effect your experience here, especially as you will most probably want to visit the iconic attraction sites. Budapest on the other hand has less crowds, simply because of the way the city is laid out and is much more spread out. If you want to avoid the crowds, opt for Budapest!

There are very nice cafés in Prague, nothing to match Budapest's many ruin bars and cafes. These charming cafés and bars with contrasting interiors and ambiance are unique to Budapest. An unmissable experience while visiting the city.

You can visit one of the15 Thermal Baths open to the public. Some of these date back to the Ottoman empire.

Prague has many towers and you can climb to take in the beautiful city’s skyline with panoramic views. In Budapest, the only thing you can climb is the dome of St. Stephen’s church and it isn’t really comparable to the towers in Prague.

Both city’s boast beauty, culture and heritage. In Prague, this is much more concentrated and more spread out in Budapest. Which one will you enjoy exploring more? We recommend visiting both instead of making a choice of one over the other, safe travels!
